Walsall Leather Skills Centre Becomes an Official Test Centre for Saddlery Qualifications

22 April 2025

We’re incredibly proud to share a milestone moment in our journey here at Walsall Leather Skills Centre—our first official qualification assessments have taken place on-site, making us a recognised test centre for City & Guilds Saddlery Qualifications!

On Friday 4th April, students at the Centre completed assessments for the National Skill Assessment and Qualification Scheme for the Saddlery Trade, validated by City & Guilds and designed to preserve and promote excellence in British saddlery.

A Step Forward For WLSC

This marks the first time we’ve hosted an external assessor here at the Centre. Chris Taylor, a Master Saddler and assessor from The Saddlers’ Den in Stockport (near Liverpool), visited to formally assess our students’ progress, craftsmanship, and readiness for recognised industry qualifications.

Hosting the assessments at our Centre is a huge step forward—not just for us, but for all our current and future students. It puts us firmly on the map as a place where aspiring saddlers can not only learn traditional leatherworking skills but also gain accredited qualifications in saddlery.

What Qualifications Were Assessed?

We had students working at multiple levels, all on their own unique learning paths:

  • Level 1 Certificate in Saddlery

Taken by Tiggy and Nick, this entry-level qualification (Foundation Course at WLSC) introduces key hand skills and basic leatherworking techniques that form the foundation of saddlery work.

  • Level 2 Diploma in Saddlery (QCF) – Bridle Making

Roh completed this specialist qualification, which focuses on precision, symmetry, and traditional bridle construction techniques using British Standards.

  • Level 2 Diploma in Saddlery (QCF) – Harness Making

Taken by Rosie, this pathway highlights the complexity and craftsmanship required in traditional harness work and is a fantastic stepping stone toward higher qualifications or professional practice.

All students demonstrated incredible skill and dedication. We couldn’t be prouder of their achievements and the way they represented both the Centre and the future of British saddlery.

What’s Next?

Now that Walsall Leather Skills Centre is an official test centre, this opens up more opportunities for our learners to progress in their training closer to home. With the support of our experienced tutors and visiting professionals, learners can work toward:

  • The Saddlers Company Level 1
  • City & Guilds Level 2 and 3 Saddlery Qualifications
  • Specialist routes in Bridle Making, Saddle Making, and Harness Making
  • Opportunities to progress into apprenticeships or professional saddlery work

We’re excited to support even more students on their journey to professional leatherwork and to keep British saddlery skills thriving.
